Aces High II

Aces High II: A Free (Sort Of) Flight Sim

Having discovered this game only a few days ago, i'd thought i'd share it with all of you.

Description

Aces High II is a combat flight simulator set in World War II.
It is your mission to destroy the opposing force, in this case, your chums or random people from the internets.
Handily, you've got a ton of machinery on your side.

Choosing from a huge array, and I mean there are loads, of vehicles, which aren't restricted to aircraft, you can gun down your targets while you bask in glory.

Cooly-cool Effects

While you're prancing around in your fancy-schmancy Spitfire, you will notice some astounding effects implemented into this free (sort of) game, such as the effects of gravity.
By that I mean, the effect of gravity on your head, moreover, your brain.

If you dip too low, too fast, blood will rush up to your head, obscuring your vision with a red veil of DEATH (sort of), and cripple your handling as you seem dizzy from it.
Go too high, too fast, and blood will drain from your brain, causing you to black out until more blood can get there, that is, once you've levelled out.

Accurate hitboxes on the planes are fantastic too, as, if you are being shot at head-on, bullet holes will appear in the cockpit window in exactly the place the bullet has passed.

You can even get shot to hell inside your cockpit, as you dissolve into blackness, with your own blood covering the windows.

The planes are completely, and accurately, destructable.
Shoot at a wing enough, and it will fall off, shoot at the tail fin enough, it will fall off, both causing the pilot to spin out of control and probably perish, unless you eject.
...Which I don't advise unless you want to play the worst FPS you've ever seen...

Graphically, the game is lacking, seeing as it is an old game, but this just means monster FPS for all of us! Hooray!

Sizewize, it's tiny, which is great, as if you get bored, you could leave it for a while without any fear of it wasting space.

Finance

The game is free in many respects, free to download and play, but after two weeks, online play in the Main Arena will be disabled, unless you subscribe. *hiss*

You can still play on 8 man servers indefinitely!

Hooray!

Easily enough fun for all of us!

Gameplay

I ran into a bit of trouble at the start, seeing as I didn't know what to do at all, so I highly recommend reading the options keyboard mapper, as it will give you enough info so you can actually get the plane going.

I haven't tried playing the game without a joystick, but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard to configure to mouse control.

The basics are pretty much;

E: Starts Engine
G: Extends/Retracts Landing Gear
-: Reduces Throttle
+: Increases Throttle
SHIFT + +: Full Speed Throttle

After you're in the air, it shouldn't be long until your shooting off wings and poking pilots in their cockpits.

That's if you can find them, in the massive maps included.
